On the loose: An alien parasite is attacking people at an American scientific research station in Antarctica. It looks like the people it attacks. In part because they don't know who has been absorbed, and because their paranoia could break them apart, this mission is more difficult than they thought it would be.

With its incredibly violent and very realistic visuals, John Carpenter's "The Thing," a box office flop from 1982, sent reviewers scurrying for the hills. Although it is still held up as an example of why physical effects hold up considerably better over time than CGI, most other life lessons you may take from this film are best avoided.
